Milton-Freewater students to begin classes on Aug. 22, 2012

Welcome Back to School!
Both Freewater and Grove elementary schools will kick off the 2012-2013 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 21 by inviting parents and students to their annual Fall Open Houses from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Staff at Ferndale Elementary plan to host their Open House on Sept. 6.

Aug. 22 will be the first day of school for all 1st-8th grade students, as well as all 9th grade students, who will attend Freshmen Orientation. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors begin school on Thursday, Aug. 23. The District has again scheduled the 45-minute early release Wednesdays throughout the year, including Aug. 22, for staff professional development.

The District will offer a half-day kindergarten program for the 2012-2013 school year. Ferndale Elementary will provide one morning and one afternoon kindergarten class, while Grove and Freewater elementary schools will provide only morning kindergarten classes. Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Aug. 22 from 7:45-9:45 a.m. at Ferndale, Grove and Freewater elementary schools. Parents will receive a mailing by the middle of August with details about orientation and kindergarten Gentle Start classes, which will be Aug. 23-24.

Registration For New Students
Students new to the District may register beginning Aug. 6. Please bring proof of immunization, a birth certificate, proof of address and a social security card to complete the registration process.

Registration for McLoughlin High School
All Grade Levels: Registration and Arena Scheduling at the high school will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. Seniors are scheduled from 8-9:30 a.m., juniors from 9:45-11:15 a.m., sophomores from 12:15-1:45 p.m. and freshmen, who will only register from 2-3:30 p.m. More information will be mailed to parents early in August regarding this method of scheduling classes. Late registrants must contact the school office to make arrangements to register.

Student fees at Mac-Hi are $20 for registration, $5 for a lock (optional, but recommended), $12 for a P.E. uniform (freshmen only) and $40 for a yearbook (optional). Some selected classes may also
require a lab fee. Supplementary insurance will be available for purchase.

Pleasant View School will open its doors on Friday, Aug. 17. Registration will be Monday, Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first day of school will be Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Mac-Hi Sports
The high school sports participation fee for 2012-2013 is $50 per sport with a $100 maximum charge per student. All athletes must have proof of health insurance. Students participating in sports for the first time, as well as all freshmen and all juniors are required to have a physical prior to participation. Mac-Hi Sports Registration Night will be Monday, Aug. 13 from 5-7 p.m. in the lobby of the high school. Fall sports practices begin Monday, Aug. 20. Daily practice times for all teams will be posted on the Mac-Hi web site.

Central Middle School
Central will hold a Parent/Student Orientation night on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. for all incoming 6th grade students. New students at the middle school can register for classes beginning Monday, Aug. 6, 2012. Fees for all students include a $10 Student Body Fee, which covers the cost for their Student Body Card, a required Student Organizer and locker padlocks. There is also a $15 PE uniform fee for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who do not already have a PE uniform. Additional vaccines (the Hep B series, the second MMR and chicken pox) are now required when entering the 7th grade.

Middle School Sports
The middle school will also hold a Fall Sports Sign-Up Night from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 13 in the lobby at Central. Middle school students participating in sports pay a fee of $25 per sport with a $50 maximum charge. Students participating in sports must have proof of insurance and a sports physical by
the first day of practice. Physical forms are available in the school office.

Meals
Milton-Freewater School District offers a variety of breakfast and lunch choices. Breakfast is free for all students in all schools. Lunch prices are $2 at the elementary schools, $2.25 at the middle school and $2.50 at the high school. A School Meal Information packet, including Free and Reduced Meal applications, will be mailed to all households with registered students in August. If you have questions, please call the Food Service Department at 938-3551, ext. 7482, after Aug. 1.

Vaccination Clinics
The Walla Walla County Health Department offers children’s immunization clinics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. Call 509-524-2650 for an appointment. Oregon Medicaid Programs and some private insurance accepted as well as cash, check, VISA or Mastercard. School vaccines are $15 each plus a $25 office visit. (Note: Oregon immunization requirements differ from Washington’s. Be sure to confirm with clinic staff that your child attends school in Oregon.)
